The Ohio State Wrestling team starts their season 1-1 in a tri-meet against Illinois and Wisconsin Saturday afternoon. The match was streamed on Big Ten plus with two streams going simultaneously. This made it very difficult to catch all of the matches. I started on stream two with Ohio State vs. Illinois at 165 pounds.
165 Pounds: Ethan Smith vs. No. 8 Danny Braunagel (Illinois)
- Ethan Smith was thrust into the starting lineup for Ohio State when Carson Kharchla suffered a season ending injury in practice recently. Smith went 19-13 last season in a very tough weight class receiving the 12 seed for the National Tournament.
- Ethan Smith started the match out strong with a quick takedown ending the first period with a 2-1 lead. Smith was able to tack on another takedown in the second period ending the period with a 4-3 lead. Smith chose down to start the third period and was able to escape extending his lead to 5-3. Smith was then hit with his second stalling call making the score 5-4 Smith. Braunagel was able to get a late takedown winning the match in a 6-5 decision. This made the team score 3-0 Illinois.
174 Pounds: No. 4 Kaleb Romero vs. DJ Shannon (Illinois)
- There was very little action in the first period leading to both wrestlers receiving a stalling warning. Romero chose to go down to start the second period quickly escaping making the score 1-0 Romero. Shannon was hit with his second stalling call in the second period extending Romero’s lead to 2-0. Romero ended the period with another takedown extending his lead to 4-0. Shannon chose to go down to start the third period and Romero nearly turned Shannon for back points before Shannon escaped making the score 4-1. Shannon was hit with another stalling call making the score 5-1 Romero. Romero ended the match with one final takedown making the final score 8-1 with Romero’s riding time. This made the team score 3-3.
184 Pounds: No. 9 Rocky Jordan vs. No. 10 Zac Braunagel (Illinois)
- Both wrestlers attempted multiple shots in the first period but were unable to cash in ending the period 0-0. Braunagel started the second period down and was able to quickly escape making the score 1-0 to end the second period. Jordan chose down to start the third period and was rode out ending the match 2-0. This made the team score 6-3 Illinois.
197 Pounds: Gavin Hoffman vs. Matt Wroblewski (Illinois)
- After defeating Chase Singletary in the wrestle-offs Hoffman got the nod in this match. There was very little action in the first period ending 0-0. Hoffman chose to go down in the second period and was able to escape making the score 1-0 Hoffman to end the second period. Wroblewski started the third period on bottom and was able to quickly escape tying the match at 1-1. Wroblewski was able to get a late takedown winning the match 3-1. This made the team score 9-3 Illinois.
HWT: No. 6 Tate Orndorff vs. No. 25 Luke Luffman (Illinois)
- Tate Orndorff is a redshirt Junior that transferred from Utah Valley University in the offseason. In the 2019-2020 season, he went 18-4 and finished as the No. 11 ranked heavyweight in the country.
- Luffman score the only takedown in the first period ending the period with a 2-1 lead. Luffman chose to go down to start the second period and was able to escape extending his lead to 3-1 at the end of the second period. Orndorff chose to go down to start the third period and was able to escape making the score 3-2 Luffman. Orndorff attempted a shot towards the end of the match but was unable to break through Luffman’s defense. Luffman defeats Orndorff in a 3-2 decision making the team score 12-3 Illinois.
AT this point in the match I switched to stream 1 to continue following the Illinois vs. Ohio State dual. At the same time the Ohio State vs. Wisconsin dual started at 165 pounds on stream 2.
125 Pounds: No. 21 Malik Heinselman vs. No. 13 Justin Cardani (Illinois)
- There was very little action in the first period ending 0-0. Cardani chose to go down to start the second period and was able to escape making the score 1-0 Cardani to end the period. Heinselman chose to go down to start the third period and was able to escape tying the match 1-1. Heinselman was finally able to break through and get a takedown making the score 3-2 after Cardani escaped. Heinselman kept attacking scoring another takedown and 4 near fall points making the final score 9-2. This made the team score 12-6 Illinois.
133 Pounds: No. 25 Jordan Decatur vs. Lucas Byrd (Illinois)
- There was very little action in the first period ending 0-0. Byrd chose to go down to start the second period quickly escaping making the score 1-0 to end the second period. Decatur chose to go down to start the third period and was unable to escape making the final score 2-0 Byrd. This made the team score 15-6 Illinois.
141 Pounds: Dylan D’Emilio vs. No. 11 Dylan Duncan (Illinois)
- D’Emilio started the match out fast with two takedowns ending the first period with a 4-1 lead. Duncan started down to start the second period but D’Emilio chose to cut him making the score 4-2. Duncan was then able to get a takedown tying the match at 4-4. D’Emilio was able to escape before the period ended making the score 5-4. D’Emilio chose to go down to start the third period and was able to escape extending his lead to 6-4. Duncan was able to get back to his offense taking down D’Emilio tying the match 6-6. Duncan chose an optional start allowing D’Emilio to escape making the score 7-6 D’Emilio. D’Emilio was then taken down and caught in a Winn Dixie leading to 4 near fall points to end the match in a 12-7 decision for Duncan. This made the team score 18-6 Illinois.
149 Pounds: No. 1 Sammy Sasso vs. No. 7 Mike Carr (Illinois)
- This match ended quickly when Sasso caught Carr in a cradle and pinned him. This made the team score 18-12 Illinois.
157 Pounds: No. 22 Elijah Cleary vs. Johnny Mologousis (Illinois)
- Cleary scored the only takedown of the first period making the score 2-1 Cleary. Cleary chose to go down to start the second period and was able to escape making the score 3-1 to end the second period. Mologousis chose to go down to start the third period and was able to escape making the score 3-2. Cleary then went into defense mode not allowing Mologousis to get to his legs making the final score a 3-2 decision for Cleary. This made the final score 18-15 Illinois.
I missed the first 5 matches in the Ohio State vs. Wisconsin match but here are the results.
165 Pounds: Ethan Smith defeated Josh Otto in a 5-3 decision.
174 Pounds: No. 4 Kaleb Romero defeated Jared Krattiger in a 9-5 decision.
184 pounds: No. 9 Rocky Jordan defeated No. 13 Chris Weiler in a 9-4 decision
197 Pounds: Gavin Hoffman defeated Andrew Salemme in a 7-3 decision
HWT: No. 5 Trent Hillger pinned No. 6 Tate Orndorff in the third period.
- Team score 12-6 OSU
After a short break in action the lower weights started in stream 1.
125 Pounds. No. 21 Malik Heinselman vs. Eric Barnett (Wisconsin)
- Heinselman was able to get to his offense quickly scoring an early takedown but Barnett was able to get a reversal tying the match 2-2. Heinselman was then able to escape making the score 3-2 Heinselman. Heinselman tacked on two more takedowns to end the first period with a 7-4 lead. Barnett chose to go down to start the second period. Heinselman accrued 1 minute of riding time before Barnett escaped making the score 7-5 Heinselman. Heinselman was able to tack on one more takedown before the second period ended making the score 9-5. Heinselman chose to go down to start the third period and was able to escape increasing his lead to 10-5. Heinselman tacked on one more takedown increasing his lead to 12-5 before the period ended. Heinselman defeated Barnett in a 13-5 major decision. This made the team score 16-6 OSU.
133 Pounds: No. 25 Jordan Decatur vs. Kyle Burwick (Wisconsin)
- Decatur was able to get two takedowns and accrue over 1 minute of riding time in the first period making the score 4-2. Decatur chose to go down to start the second period and was rode out erasing his riding time and giving Burwick over 1 minute of riding time. Burwick chose to go down to start the third period and was able to escape making the score 4-3 Decatur. Decatur was able to get back to his offense getting to Burwicks legs for one more take down ending the match with a 6-4 decision. This made the team score 19-6 OSU.
141 Pounds: Anthony Echemendia vs. Trey Escobar (Wisconsin)
- The highly touted freshman from Cuba made his college debut in the second match of the day. Echemendia started the match out very aggressively scoring 4 takedowns in the first period ending the period with a 8-4 lead. Escobar chose to go down to start the second period and was able to quickly escape making the score 8-5 Echemendia. The second period ended with Echemendia leading 9-5. Echemendia chose to go down to start the third period and was able to escape increasing his lead to 10-5. Escobar got to Echemendia’s legs cutting the deficit to 10-7. Echemendia was able to escape and the match ended in a 11-7 decision for Echemendia.
149 Pounds: No. 1 Sammy Sasso vs. Drew Scharenbrock (Wisconsin)
- As soon as the whistle blew Scharenbrock shot for Sasso’s legs like he was shot out of a cannon. This translated into a takedown and a 90 second ride for Scharenbrock. Sasso was able to get a reversal and was able to ride Scharenbrock out for the rest of the first period. Scharenbrock started the second period on bottom quickly escaping. This made the score 3-2 Scharenbrock. Sasso then went on the attack ending the second period with two takedowns and 4 near fall points making the score 10-4 Sasso to end the second period. Sasso chose down to start the third period quickly scoring another reversal making the score 12-4. Scharenbrock was able to escape at the last second avoiding a major decision for Sasso. Making the final score a 12-5 decision victory for Sasso.
157 Pounds: No. 22 Elijah Cleary vs. Garrett Model (Wisconsin)
- There was very little action in the first period ending 0-0. Model chose to go down to start the second period and was able to quickly escape making the score 1-0 Model to end the period. Cleary chose to go down to start the third period and was able to escape tying the match at 1-1. Model was able to break through Cleary defenses for the deciding takedown of the match winning in a 3-2 decision. This ended the dual in a 25-9 victory for OSU.
Ohio State starts the season 1-1 after starting slowly against Illinois but was able to bounce back against Wisconsin.
