Buckeyes Fall Short in Ann Arbor

The Buckeyes returned to the mat Friday night against No. 2 Michigan who came into the dual with a 3-0 record. The Buckeyes are ranked No. 8 with a 5-2 record after splitting matches with Iowa and Purdue last weekend. Michigan won 5/10 matches on their way to an 18-16 victory. This is the first time Michigan has defeated Ohio State in Ann Arbor since 2007. Please read below for match by match details.


165 Pounds: No. 7 Ethan Smith (6-1) vs. No. 23 Cameron Amine (3-0)


- Smith started this match aggressively which led to an early stall warning against Amine. In the last few seconds of the first period Smith got in deep on an attack but was unable to score the takedown. Ohio State challenged the call but it was upheld. Amine chose to go down to start the second period and was able to escape making the score 1-0 Amine. Neither wrestler was able to get into scoring position the rest of the period. Smith chose to go down in the third period and was able to escape tying the match 1-1. Amine was then able to catch Smith in a fireman carry and score a takedown making the score 3-1. Smith was then able to escape and get back to his offense scoring a late takedown and rideout winning the match 4-3. Smith’s decision made the team score 3-0 OSU.


174 Pounds: Fritz Schierl (1-3) vs. No. 2 Logan Massa (3-0)


- Romero has a lower body injury from the dual against Iowa so Schierl got the nod at 174 today. Massa had 3 takedowns in the first period ending the period with a 6-2 lead. Schierl chose to go down to start the second period and Massa was able to turn Schierl leading to 4 nearfall points and racking up 3 minutes of riding time making the score 10-2 to end the second period. Massa chose to go down to start the third period and scored a quick escape, increasing his lead to 11-2. Massa scored one final takedown making the final score a 14-2 major decision. Massa’s major decision made the team score 4-3 UM.


184 Pounds: No. 17 Rocky Jordan (3-4) vs. Jelani Embree (0-0)


- Jordan started this match aggressively with a quick takedown, 4 nearfall points, and accruing nearly 2 minutes of riding time to end the first period with a 6-0 lead. Embree chose to go down to start the second period. Embree was hit with a stalling warning then Jordan was able to turn him again for 4 more nearfall points making the score 10-0. Embree was then hit with another stalling before time expired making the score 11-0 Jordan. Embree was down to start the third period. Jordan tried turning Embree again but Embree laid flat on the mat preventing the turn. This led to another stalling which made the score 12-0. Jordan continued working in the top position was but unable to score before time expired. Jordan’s major decision made the team score 7-4 OSU.


197 Pounds: Gavin Hoffman (4-3) vs. Myles Amine (0-0)


- Myles Amine made his season debut for Michigan at a new weight. Amine feels that wrestling at 197 pounds in college allows him to train for the Olympics for which he will compete at 86 kg or 189 pounds. Amine made history qualifying for San Marino, which is a small country in Northern Italy.


- Amine started the match with the first takedown and was able to score two nearfall points making the score 4-0. Hoffman was able to escape making the score 4-1. Hoffman was then able to score a takedown of his own cutting Amine’s lead to 4-3 until Amine escaped. Hoffman started the second period on bottom and was able to escape making the score 5-4 Amine. Amine was able to score one more takedown but Hoffman escaped making the score 7-5 Amine to end the second period. Amine chose to go down to start the third period and was able to escape increasing his lead to 8-5. Hoffman continued to attack but was unable to break through Amine’s defenses ending the match in an 8-5 defeat. Amine’s victory made the team score 7-7.


HWT: No. 9 Tate Orndorff (4-3) vs. No. 2 Mason Parris (3-0)


- Parris started the match with a quick takedown and rideout making the score 2-0 to end the first period. Parris chose to go down to start the second period. Orndorff was hit with his second stalling then Parris was able to escape increasing his lead to 4-0. Parris finished the second period with 3 more takedowns and 4 near fall points making the score 14-2. Orndorff chose to go down to start the third period and was able to escape making the score 14-3. Parris continued his relentless pace with 3 more takedowns ending the match in a 20-5 tech fall. Parris’ techfall made the team score 12-7 UM.


125 Pounds: No. 11 Malik Heinselman (5-1) vs. Kurt Mchenry (0-1)


- Heinselman scored the only takedown in the first period making the score 2-0. Heinselman chose to go down to start the second period and was able to escape increasing his lead to 3-0. Neither wrestler was able to score the rest of the period. Mchenry was the smaller wrestler but he made up for it in quickness. Mchenry chose to go down to start the third period and was able to escape making the score 3-1 Heinselman. Mchenry continued to attack but was unable to break through for a takedown. Heinselman defeated Mchenry by a 3-1 decision. Heinselman’s decision made the team score 12-10 UM.


133 Pounds: Jordan Decatur (6-2) vs. Jack Medley (3-1)


- Both wrestlers fought for position in the first period but were unable to get into scoring position. Medley chose to go down to start the second period and was able to escape making the score 1-0. Medley was then able to get to Decatur’s legs for a takedown increasing his lead to 3-0. Decatur was able to scramble for a reversal cutting into Medley’s lead making the score 3-2 to end the second period. Decatur chose to go down to start the third period and was able to escape tying the match 3-3. Medley was able to score the deciding takedown as time ticked down. Decatur escaped but was unable to score as time ran out. Medley defeated Decatur by a 6-4 decision. Medley’s victory made the team score 15-10 UM.


141 Pounds: Dylan D’Emilio (3-3) vs. Drew Mattin (2-1)


- Mattin score the only takedown in the first period making the score 2-1 to end the period. Mattin chose to go down to start the second period and was able to escape increasing his lead to 3-1. D’Emilio was able to score a takedown tying the match at 3-3 until Mattin escaped. The second period ended with Mattin leading 4-3. D’Emilio chose to go down to start the third period and was able to escape tying the match 4-4. Both wrestlers fought for position but D’Emilio came out on top with the final takedown of the match winning by a 6-5 decision. D’Emilio’s victory made the team score 15-13 UM.


149 Pounds: No. 2 Sammy Sasso (7-0) vs. No. 7 Kanen Storr (3-0)


- Storr had the first real shot attempt of the match that nearly turned into a takedown, but Sasso’s elite scrambling ability prevented Storr from scoring. Sasso was then able to score a takedown late in the period ending the first period with a 2-0 lead. Sasso chose to go down to start the second period and was able to escape increasing his lead to 3-0. Sasso scored the only takedown of the period making the score 5-0 after 2 periods. Storr chose to go down to start the third period and Sasso was able to accrue over 1 minute of riding time before Storr escaped making the score 5-1. Sasso was able to score one more takedown making the final score an 8-1 decision. Sasso’s victory made the team score 16-15 OSU with one match to go.


157 Pounds: Elijah Cleary (4-3) vs. No. 8 Will Lewan (3-0)


- Cleary had to great attacks in the first period but was unable to convert them into points. Cleary chose to go down to start the second period and was able to escape taking a 1-0 lead. Neither wrestler was able to get into scoring position ending the second period 1-0. Lewan chose to go down in the third period and was able to escape tying the match at 1-1. Again neither wrestler was able to get into scoring position ending the third period tied at 1-1. The match then went to sudden victory where one minute is placed on the clock and both wrestlers start in a neutral position. In sudden victory the first point scored wins. Neither wrestler was able to score so the match went to tie breaker 1 where 30 seconds is placed on the clock and one wrestler goes down. Lewan went down in this period and was able to quickly escape taking a 2-1 lead. Cleary then chose to go down in tie breaker 2. Cleary was able to escape after a short ride from Lewan tying the match at 2-2. The match then went to sudden victory 2. Again neither wrestler was able to score so the match entered Tiebreaker 3. Cleary chose to go down and was able to escape taking a 3-2 lead. In tie breaker 4 Lewan went down. Lewan had accrued the most riding time throughout the match so unless Cleary rode him out he would win. Lewan exploded from the bottom position to score a quick escape and the 4-3 decision. Lewan’s victory made the final team score 18-16 UM.


Outside of Iowa Ohio State continues to find themselves in close duals with fellow Big Ten teams. Ohio State needs to continue improving their mat wrestling if they want to make a run in the Big Ten tournament and the National Tournament.
